Glass Bottles 1850's to 1870's Soda & Mineral Water Bottles |
Below is our selection of Soda & Mineral Water Bottles of the 1850's to 1870's period. These bottles had the tops that used the cork. They had used a metal bail that held the cork in place.
During the 1850's to 1870's period, the Soda & Mineral Water bottles went through several stages of improvements. Part in the process of making these bottles and part in the improvement of the top. There are very few embossed Soda Bottles that used the older method of bottle making, the OPEN PONTIL method. The 1st main method used in making embossed Soda bottles was the IRON PONTIL bottom type. Then an improvement in bottle making brought the SMOOTH BOTTOM type.
For the bottle tops, in the beginning it was the tapered top type and then the double collar type. Later came the blob top type because they were less likely to chip than the earlier types of top. The earlier method of putting the top on was the APPLIED TOP where the top was applied by hand. Later an improvement in making the bottle used the TOOLED TOP method.
These Bottles types went out of use when the bottles using stoppers other than cork were developed starting in the late 1870's with the rise of the Lightning stopper bottles and the Hutchinson type bottles.
Some of these bottles may have been used for porter, wine, and beer but the main use of these bottles were the Soda and Mineral Water.
