Antique Glass Soda Bottles 1880's to early 1900's

Below is our selection of Soda Bottles of the 1880's to early 1900's period. Some of these bottles had the tops that used stoppers instead of a cork.

In the late 1870's the Hutchinson type bottle was developed which used a metal wire and stopper that can be pushed in while drinking out of it and then pulled back up to close the bottle to save the remainder of the drink.

These bottles went out of use in the early 1900's when the bottles using the crown tops type mouth was invented. Those bottles which used a metal cap lined with cork was developed in the late 1890's.

Note: the white spots on the bottle in the pictures are just reflections of the light

A nice ca. 1880 to 1890's Soda Bottle

The bottle embossing says "J. NIEFERGOLD HAMBURGH N. Y." on the front. On the base is a large block "N"

The bottle is of a nice deep light bluish Aqua color and it is a blown in mold bottle with a hand applied blob top. The bottle look simular to the Hutchinson type bottle but the shoulders is more sloping. There are some small bubbles in the glass.

The bottle is in a nice shiny condition with little case wear and a small ding to the top.

The bottle is about 6 3/8 inches tall.

From the 1880 census of Hamburgh, Erie County, New York, we find:

JOSEPH NEIFERGOLD age 42 born ca. 1838 in Alsace; his wife Frances age 30 born ca. 1850 in Alsace; his children Frances age 6 born ca. 1874, Mary age 5 born ca. 1875, George age 1 born ca. 1879, and Joseph age 8 months born ca. 1879-1880 all born in New York.
